Summer in Berlin
I just returned from spending a few days in Berlin where I taught a 3 days street photography workshop to a really fun group of people, most of whom had attended one or more of my workshops before.
It had been many, many years since my last visit to Berlin. I wasn’t even a photographer back then. The city certainly offers a great variety of interesting backdrops for street photography, from modern architecture to historical monuments.
I hope you followed my daily videos on Instagram Stories, a fun way for me to take you on photo walks. Here are some of my favorite people pics collected during my short visit. Simple moments of everyday life in an amazing city.
Which do you prefer?
All photos shot with the Fujifilm X100F in Acros.
Great shots!

Valerie, may I ask about technique. I love your high-contrast, chiaroscuro shots that show people in silhouette against a bright background. How do you meter these shots? An average metering would not produce such contrast. How much of the intended effect is achieved in post? Thanks for any information, and I hope to see you again in Berkeley sometime.

Hi Gary! It’s all in camera goodness 🙂 I actually keep my camera in average metering because switching to spot in a fraction of a second when I see a silhouette opportunity would be quick enough. I simply turn my exposure compensation dial to get the deep shadows. I do very minimal post-processing, if any.
Join a workshop next year!

Hi Valerie, for me the most beautifull one is the Lady sitting in the Train, mirrored in the window. Great light, simple background and a human being in the center.

Hi Valerie –
We so appreciate your posts. Wondering when your book will be issued as we are thinking we’d love to purchase copies for our clients for holiday gifts this December.
Please let us know.

Thanks Luís. That shot gave me great satisfaction. It’s why we roam the streets tirelessly for hours with our cameras, isn’t it? 🙂
