Shop Local: The Guitar Repair Shop

What a treat! I visited the St Paul Guitar Repair shop today. Co-owners Ron and Michele greeted me and were soon joined by Kevin. They specialize in guitar repair and restoration but each one of them also makes their own line of guitars! Over the years, they’ve had the privilege of working on guitars from very famous artists such as James Taylor, Prince, Sean Lennon, Leo Kottke, Indigo Girls, Soul Asylum, Bonnie Raitt to name a few.

I photographed them working on restoration jobs then asked to make a portrait of each one with their own creations.

In order below: Michele Beardsley with one of her Hep Cat Lap Steels. Ron Tracy with a Ron Tracy Guitar (T 92). and Kevin Schwab with his Schwab Electric Mandolin.

What a fun team! I can’t wait to visit them again, and listen to more stories when things are normal and we can spend time talking and laughing without masks 😉

If you need some expert advice on a guitar, I don’t think you can find a better place. Check them out!

Note: I work with a mask. The subject takes his/her mask off briefly for the portrait, but keeps it on when I do hand close-ups.

Since I have a few more weeks before I start traveling again, I decided to focus my attention and my camera on independent small business owners.

This project is shot with the Fujifilm X100V using ambient light. I am applying the same limitations as with the Musicians at play and The Artist & the Space  projects.

Thank you for visiting!
