All You Need Is Light And A Camera. Any Light, Any Camera.

I receive a lot of emails from photographers who are in a creative rut. That happens, it’s part of being an artist. I wrote a few articles about that, here is one that was published on dPS recently: Lost Your Mojo? Ten Tips To Bring Back The Magic. To keep growing as a photographer you need to exercise ‘visual push-ups’ everyday, or as often as you possibly can. You don’t need to go to an exotic location or even leave the comfort of your own home. All you need is light and a camera. Any light, any camera. You can pick any ordinary object and make it look interesting. I do it all the time just for fun. I love to see beauty in ordinary objects. Last saturday I happened upon this stack of old bottles and jars by a window in a farm building converted into an antique store. I love glass and the way light shows all its imperfections. I stopped for a few minutes and took a few shots. Try it, this simple exercise can go a long way in helping those creative juices flow again! Please share your experience in the comment section below.

  1. I only use ambient light, never flash. There may have been some artificial lights in a corner of the building but not where I was, it was actually quite dark in that corner with just a window (my favorite light source!) I pushed the ISO to 2500 for some of the shots.

  2. I also love old glass – did you use Flash here Valerie? There are some strange light reflections, some from a window but one looks like a fluorescent lite (overhead).
